Joining a Club
Woodchopping is a fun and exciting sport for both competitive and recreational individuals. Clubs welcome new members, offering a sense of camaraderie and a chance to take part in a heritage sport. Check out the calendar for meeting dates and if you’re nearby, reach out to the event secretary and they can provide further help to get you started. Even non-competitors can help prepare and run meetings.
Equipment
The axes and saws used in competitive wood chopping are not your average hardware store finds.
They are custom-made for this specific purpose.
Owning two axes, one for hardwood and the other for soft or medium wood, is the minimum for most competitors, you do not need a vast collection in order to compete.
Chain mesh socks and shin guards are also an important part of the safety of the sport.
These are required in South Island competitions and are strongly recommended when competing around the country.
